Comparative thematic record devoted to the anthropomorphic effigy of reed, straw, rags and vegetable fibres — material personification of communal evil, carried in ritual procession and destroyed by fire and/or water at the liminal passages of the seasonal cycle. Case studies: Su Ceomo of the Carnival of Fonni (central Sardinia, Barbagia di Ollolai); the Nannu of the Sicilian Carnival (Palermo, Corleone); the Argei of archaic Rome, together with the related Compitalia and Lemuria; Marzanna/Morana of the West Slavic and Polesian area.
